Description

The Arts Education & Community Outreach Intern will get a front-row seat to African Soul International's exciting push to bring West African drumming and dance programs to 50+ new schools for Black History Month 2027. Working closely with staff mentors, you'll help build a simple database of target schools and key contacts (like principals or teachers), send out outreach emails or messages with guidance, assist with scheduling school visits, and create fun student engagement materials like worksheets or quick surveys. You'll also attend live school performances (during your scheduled hours) to take notes, snap photos, or chat with students about their experience. By the end, you'll understand how arts programs connect communities, build partnerships, and make a real impact—perfect for exploring careers in education, nonprofits, or the arts!

Duties include:

  1. Helping research schools online and add them to a shared spreadsheet, with staff tips on what to look for.
  2. Assisting with friendly outreach emails or calls to schools, practicing clear communication.
  3. Supporting performance logistics, like confirming times or helping set up simple materials.
  4. Creating basic student handouts or post-show surveys using easy tools like Google Docs.
  5. Attending performances to document fun moments, gather quick feedback, and track basic program stats for reports.

Additional Duties and Activities

Your main focus will be the projects above, but you'll also join weekly team meetings to learn about nonprofit basics, watch live West African drumming and dance shows for cultural inspiration, shadow staff at school or community events, and help with light admin like organizing files in Google Drive. You'll network with guest speakers from LA's arts scene, join workshops on resumes and interviews, and team up with our virtual assistant and marketing folks to practice remote work. We tailor extra learning to your interests!

Qualifications

No experience needed—just curiosity about arts, education, culture, or community work! We're looking for enthusiastic team players with good communication skills (written and spoken), who are excited about youth empowerment and West African arts. Basic Google Drive skills are a plus; social media interest is welcome. Bring your willingness to learn and have fun!
